A concussion can affect much more than memory, balance, or concentration. Because vision depends heavily on the brain, adults may continue experiencing visual symptoms long after the initial injury. At The Center for Vision Development in Annapolis, we use neuro-optometric rehabilitation to identify and address vision problems associated with concussions and other brain injuries.
Your eyes may be healthy, yet the brain can have difficulty controlling eye movements or processing visual information after a concussion. These problems may become especially noticeable when reading, working on a computer, driving, or moving through visually busy environments.
Lingering post-concussion vision issues may include:
· Blurred or double vision
· Headaches during visually demanding tasks
· Light sensitivity
· Difficulty focusing or tracking words while reading
· Eye strain and visual fatigue
· Problems with depth perception or spatial awareness
· Dizziness or balance difficulties related to visual input
For adults in Annapolis and throughout Maryland, these symptoms can interfere with returning to work, driving comfortably, exercising, and completing everyday activities.
Neuro-optometric rehabilitation focuses on improving how the eyes and brain work together. Instead of looking only at visual clarity, we evaluate functional visual skills that may have been disrupted by the concussion.
Our approach is individualized because every brain injury and recovery process is different. Depending on the findings of the evaluation, treatment may include structured visual exercises designed to improve eye teaming (the ability of both eyes to work together as a team), focusing, tracking, visual processing, and coordination.
Therapeutic lenses, prisms, filters, or other specialized tools may also be incorporated when appropriate. The goal is to help the visual system function more efficiently rather than simply asking the patient to compensate for persistent difficulties.
Post-concussion symptoms are often complex, and vision may be only one part of the recovery process. Neuro-optometric rehabilitation can work alongside other supportive therapies when an adult is also receiving care for balance, cognitive, physical, or neurological concerns.
At our Annapolis practice, we develop treatment around each patient's specific visual deficits and daily demands. This allows us to focus on the skills that matter most, whether the goal is returning to computer work, reading comfortably, driving, or participating in normal activities without triggering visual symptoms.
If headaches, blurred vision, difficulty reading, visual fatigue, balance problems, or other vision symptoms remain after a concussion, a neuro-optometric evaluation may help determine whether an underlying visual dysfunction is contributing to the problem.
Many of the adults we see have been told their symptoms should have resolved by now, or that nothing more can be done. If that sounds familiar, we encourage you to schedule an evaluation. Please contact our Annapolis office at (410) 268-4393, and we will be happy to discuss whether neuro-optometric rehabilitation can support your recovery.
